Bottom Rankings, Broken System
California finds itself at the bottom of the national rankings when it comes to supporting children. A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows the state ranks 33rd in overall child well-being and 34th in education, making this the 15th consecutive year California has landed in the bottom third of states. Despite its wealth, California continues to fall short on the policies and public investments needed to ensure kids can thrive.
This is why California needs to reform Prop 13. For decades, this Proposition let the wealthiest corporations avoid paying their fair share, starving our schools and child-serving programs in the processes. If we are serious about improving student achievement and child well-being, we must make sure wealthiest corporations pay their fair share and in turn provide better resources for fully funded schools such as smaller class sizes, student supports, and the educators who make learning possible.
