Privatization is the Problem

The Network for Public Education recently published their yearly report detailing how every state’s public education system ranks in the United States. This report rates states in four categories: privatization (the expansion of private and charter schools and the voucher system, as well as protections for taxpayers and students), protections for homeschooled students (laws that ensure homeschooled students receive an adequate and safe education), school funding (sufficient and equitable funding for education), and conditions for teaching and learning (whether students and teachers are provided with the environment and resources to thrive).

This report provided many interesting findings regarding public school investment, and lessons to be taken away and applied to San Francisco. It is important to note that this report does not measure student and teacher performance, but instead the laws and policies of states that either support or undermine them. The conclusions make sense: the states which most strongly reroute public resources to private and charter schools are the same states which neglect public school systems, students, and teachers. If we want to support our public school system and the people who participate in it, we must fight back against privatization. Read the full report to learn more about how we can protect our public schools and build a more equitable education system.
