Petition to SFUSD Board of Education to Halt School Closures
To Superintendent Maria Su, Assistant Superintendent Davina Goldwasser, and the San Francisco Board of Education:
I am a San Francisco resident who supports a moratorium on school closures, mergers, and consolidations. I believe that every San Franciscan has the right to a fully-funded, world class sustainable community school within safe walking distance of their home.
School cuts don’t save money or increase enrollment
School cuts discriminate against Black and Brown communities
School cuts harm children and families
School cuts hurt neighborhoods
I demand that the district and school board work with the community to develop a plan to transform every school in San Francisco into a community-led, community driven Sustainable Community School with wraparound supportive services for families and community members. Research proves sustainable community schools WORK, increase enrollment, and are cost effective. A recent study showed that in community schools statewide:
Chronic absences were significantly reduced.
Suspension rates went down by an average of 15%.
Students at sustainable community schools had higher average test scores, equivalent to an additional 43 days of learning.
The initiative effectively served diverse, and often marginalized students across California: the average participating school served 90% low-income, English Language Learner, or foster care students.
