Petition to SFUSD Board of Education to Halt School Closures

To: Superintendent Maria Su, Assistant Superintendent Davina Goldwasser, and the San Francisco Board of Education:

I am a San Francisco resident who supports a moratorium on school closures, mergers, and consolidations. I believe that every San Franciscan has the right to a fully-funded, world class sustainable community school within safe walking distance of their home.

I ask the district to rescind the plan to close the Academy-San Francisco at McAteer, a community of marginalized students who care deeply about their school. The Academy houses the only district program for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, and the proposed closure is an attack on the families and educators at this school, and an attack on public education. Furthermore:

  • School closures don’t save money or increase enrollment

  • School closures discriminate against Black and Brown communities

  • School closures harm children and families

  • School closures hurt neighborhoods

We Demand that the Academy become a fully-funded, community-led, community-driven sustainable community school with wraparound supportive services for families.
