Stop the School Reorganization Plan
Our Demands
Immediately halt this reckless reorganization process and center equity.
Launch a community process to create fully funded sustainable community schools which respond to the needs of our neighborhoods. Sustainable community schools are cost-effective and are a proven way to meet the needs of our families.
HOW TO TAKE ACTION
Come to the Oct. 13 Board of Education meeting at 555 Franklin St. and speak out against this process during public comment time. The meeting starts at 6:30, please try to arrive by 6:15. If you can’t attend in person, please provide public comment virtually. The Zoom link is here.
On Tuesday, October 13, the San Francisco school board is slated to vote on a reckless plan to change the boundaries of the district’s enrollment map. Proposed enrollment maps have been drawn in a way that would disenfranchise our Black families and create sweeping changes and chaos for families in every neighborhood of San Francisco. These proposed maps are eerily similar to real estate redlining maps. We think this is not a coincidence.
Only 55 of the 2,700 respondents to the survey were African-American. The district’s failure to connect to Black communities repeats practices where Black school children have been neglected. These maps would result in more pushout of our Black families and make our schools even more segregated.
The maps were created by School Board President Phil Kim and Enrollment Center Executive Director Lauren Koehler. Both President Kim and Director Poehler are former executives of KIPP charter school, a national charter school chain notorious for its pushout of Black students and harsh disciplinary practices.
President Kim and Director Koehler were also the architects of the reckless plan to permanently close 13 schools back in October 2024. The majority of the schools targeted for closure were schools with predominantly Black and Brown students, along with three schools with large numbers of Chinese newcomer students.
This new school reorganization plan will also lead to school closures. School closures have long lasting negative effects on students, families, educators, and communities.
In the time of Trump, the San Francisco Alliance will not support school enrollment maps that cruelly disenfranchise our Black families or any of our marginalized families.
