SFUSD Strike: ‘When One of Us Needs Something, We All Need Something’

Despite a last-minute attempt from Mayor Daniel Lurie to halt the strike, educators and community members took over the streets of San Francisco to advocate for themselves when the district wouldn’t. Supporters took over the streets for 4 tireless days to support educators' pleas for adequate healthcare, salary raises, and funding for special education. Furthermore, special education funding has been at the forefront of attacks by the SFUSD, as many paraeducators are paid below a livable wage. It is ridiculous to believe that paraeducators are among the chopping block for funding despite being a pivotal resource for special education students and families.

Nearly 47 Years after the last strike at SFUSD, the community cannot continue to let history repeat itself, as the fight for educators is not over. We must reform Prop 13 to sustainably pay teachers what they need to survive and allocate funding to schools, educators, and students. This strike serves as a call for the district to take the community's needs seriously and ensure that funding priorities are for the most marginalized students in SFUSD. By reforming Prop 13, California can generate $17 billion annually, which can fund schools, protect jobs, and end this cycle.
