A Dose of Hope in the Fight Against Big Tech in Schools
A fast-moving, grassroots campaign against big tech in schools is brewing, and it is leading to unlikely alliances. People are fed up with AI damaging the quality of education in the public school system, and they are fed up across party lines. Parents especially are a powerful force to be reckoned with within this movement. Reducing AI and screen time in schools IS possible, especially when we have the people power behind the movement that we do. People are also concerned about the lack of transparency between school administrators and parents when it comes to what extent students are using technology in schools.
Another aspect of the fight against big technology in schools is standardized testing. Standardized testing can be a method by which corporations attempt to privatize our school system and profit off of our students and teachers. Some standardized tests, which are required by the government, are required to be taken on screens, like the MCAS exams. While our school system is increasingly squeezed for funding, resources, and programs, big tech companies are attempting to move in and privatize our school system. Not even to mention the negative effects of excessive screen time and AI use on our students. We must protect our students from the harmful effects of big technology, and the good news is that a movement is building to do just that.
