House Leaders Gut Public Education to Fund Charters

House Majority leaders have unveiled their FY26 education budget—and it’s a direct hit on public schools. The bill slashes $12.1 billion from K-12 funding, cutting deeply into Title I programs for low-income students, eliminating English Language Acquisition Grants, ending teacher training support, and zeroing out Full-Service Community Schools. At the same time, it hands $500 million to charter school expansion, funneling public dollars into privatization schemes while eliminating lifeline programs for kids and families.

The consequences will be catastrophic: larger class sizes, fewer supports for struggling students, and deepening inequities in rural and high-need communities. At a moment when students need more support, House leaders are pulling the rug out from under millions of children. This is a calculated attack on public schools.
