“Educational Freedom” Does Not Make Everyone Free
The school privatization movement, also known as a movement for educational freedom, effectively aims to limit certain students’ access to free, appropriate education. The school privatization movement aims to turn our education system into a system that delivers profits into the hands of the few, not a system to educate and uplift students. It aims to funnel public funds meant for public education into private systems and pockets, while also providing a space for wealthy families who disagree with civic values a place to send their children. It turns the education system into a player in the free market, which has historically failed to provide adequate education for marginalized students.
School privatization and the school choice movement must be rejected. Families should not be able to buy a better education for their students simply because they are able to afford private school. Every student deserves a free and adequate education. Public schools are places where students are able to break down the barriers between us, learn to empathize with each other and work together to create a better world. School privatization aims to keep those barriers up and uplift the few at the expense of the many.
